THE BRAIN

THE BRAIN

The brain is an electrochemical organ and can generate 25 watts of power while you're awake--enough to illuminate a light bulb.  It is made up of billions of brain cells called neurons, which use electricity to communicate with each other. The combination of millions of neurons sending signals at once produces an enormous amount of electrical activity in the brain, which can be detected using sensitive medical equipment (such as an EEG), measuring electricity levels over areas of the scalp.

BRAINWAVE PATTERNS

BRAINWAVE PATTERNS

The combination of electrical activity of the brain is commonly called a Brainwave pattern, because of its cyclic, 'wave-like' nature.  Our mind regulates its activities by means of electric waves which are registered in the brain, emitting tiny electrochemical impulses of varied frequencies, which can be registered by an electroencephalogram.

Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves. There are 4 categories of these brainwaves, ranging from the most activity to the least activity.  These brainwaves are known as:

  • Beta Waves (13-40 Hz)
Associated with worry, stress, paranoia, fear, irritability, moodiness, anger.  Connected to weakened health and immune system. Fully awake and alert. Nervousness, depression and anxiety.  People spend most of their time in Beta state.
  • Alpha Waves (7-13 HZ)
Meditation and relaxation begins. Effortless creativity flows.  Powerful state of memory and super-learning.  A harmonious, peaceful state.  Habits, fears, and phobias begin to melt away.  Tranquility and calm.
Theta Waves (4-7 Hz)
Insight, intuition, inspiration. Answers to important questions can be found. Feels like you are floating. A wonderful realm to explore. Dream-like imagery. Good for problem solving. Feel more connected to others.

Delta Waves (0-4 z)
Renewal, healing, rejuvenation. Deep. dream-less sleep. Very rewarding. Said to be the state to non-physical states of reality. Best state for immune system function, restoration, and health.

BETA WAVES
are of relatively low amplitude and are the fastest of the four different brainwaves. They are characteric of a strongly engaged mind. A person in active conversation, a presenter, an anchorman would be in beta. A debater would be in high beta. In beta you are fully awake and alert; aware of what you are thinking, feeling, and doing. Your reactions to what you are thinking, feeling, and doing are conscious acts committed at a conscious level through the conscious mind.

ALPHA WAVES
were the first to be discovered (ergo: alpha). They do not seem to appear when people are fully alert or fast asleep. Alpha waves are characteristic of people who are lightly relaxed, not fully alert. If watching TV you may feel like you want to close your eyes, but you are still aware of your surroundings and react to outside stimuli. Sometimes when you are driving, you may unconsciously go through a stop sign, or you may wonder "How did I get here?" This is characteristic of beta/theta states.

It is good to note that the brains of very creative people exhibit more alpha waves than the brains of average individuals.

THETA WAVES
are characteristic of a mind that is deeply relaxed. It becomes more difficult to concentrate. You may have the television on, but your eyes have closed involuntarily. You may hear the phone ring, but you just cannot consciously bring yourself to answer it.

Individuals who run outdoors often are in the state of mental relaxation that is slower than alpha and when in theta they are prone to a flow of ideas. This can also occur in the shower or tub or even while shaving or brushing your hair.

It is a state where tasks become so automatic that you can mentally disengage from them. The ideation that can take place during the theta state is often free flow and occurs without censorship or guilt. It is typically a very positive state.

When I am hiking with my little dog, Penny Lane, some of my best ideas manifest. Everyday problems somehow seem to be resolved when my mind is not in my usual beta state. Sometimes, however, I detach so much that I get off the trail without thinking and wind up getting lost and my beta waves kick in again.

DELTA WAVES
are characteristic of a mind that is deep in sleep, unaware of outside interferences. The phone rings, you don't even hear it.

The understanding of brainwave activity allows for understanding hypnosis. The Conscious Mind is totally dominant in the Beta state, while the Subconscious Mind is totally dominant in the Theta state. Somewhere between being fully awake and alert in Beta and being deep asleep in Delta is where suggestibility is possible and change is more likely to happen.
